Tohoku encompasses the northern part of the main island of Honshu. This region is primarily mountainous, particularly in the center and along the eastern coast. As a result these areas are relatively sparsely populated. The western side around Akita city is fairly flat. This is the `rice-basket` of Japan and is famous for its delicious sake. In fact, Tohoku produces a quarter of Japan’s total rice crop, so expect to ride by more than a couple of rice fields on a tour of this region. With short summers and long winters, this region is best experienced in the warmer months from May to October. The largest city in the region is Sendai and just an hour’s ride north of Sendai you’ll find Matsushima; a group of islands considered to be one of the most beautiful sites in Japan. A number of interesting festivals are held throughout Tohoku. Some of these include the Nebuta Festival in Aomori and Hirosaki, the Tanabata Festival in Sendai and the Namahage-Sedo Demon Festival in Oga City.
